Hamilton, Model 21 sidereal chronometer with rare variable interval break circuit attachment by Joseph A. Kuhn, Sr, fusee-drive with spring detent escapement and 56-hour winding indicator, within brass tub, silvered dial of approximately 4 inch diameter with "Sidereal" marking in red within seconds-register, variable break circuit interval selection register inside 10, signature disk inside two marked "Break - Circuit Patented Jos. A. Kuhn Sr. Baltimore, MD" inside 2, KWKS (key not included with lot), spring detent escapement with capped escape wheel, 14J, mono-metallic free-sprung balance with helical Elinvar hairspring, choking element located on main plate perimeter adjacent to balance, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#2E12157 with matching serial number to dial. A fascinating piece and the first example of this item we have encountered, Joseph A. Kuhn, Sr. was granted U.S. patent 2690482 on September 28th, 1954 for his variable interval break circuit attachment design. Please see our photos for images of the patent records.
CONDITION:
Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance swings freely but escapement is not advancing, overhaul needed, winding indicator function untested, break circuit attachment function untested, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, few small fine scratches; dial with some small mild spots in visible portion, typical perimeter scrape under bezel; fine hands, hour with bent tip, hour and minute with areas of oxide and finish loss; tub shows little wear, some scattered dark spots; glass crystal with some scratches.
